A New Push to Get Community College Students to the Polls

New coalition, Community College Commitment, aims to increase voting among community college students, historically lower than four-year college peers. Spearheaded by Levi Strauss & Co., Lyft, SHOWTIME/MTV Entertainment Studios, Paramount Global, and American Association of Community Colleges, the initiative plans to fund voter registration events on campuses, targeting 500,000 new student voters by 2028. The coalition will provide grants for voting drives and host a concert competition to encourage voter registration. Despite representing 40% of postsecondary students in the U.S., community college students’ voting rates remain low due to challenges like commuting, juggling jobs, and limited resources.
