Diverse: Issues In Higher Education
School year start requires culturally responsive educators for marginalized students. Barriers to achievement include racial discrimination, low expectations, excessive discipline, and underrepresentation in advanced classes. Teachers and school psychologists play key roles. Respect for students’ cultural backgrounds and preferred names is crucial. Recommendations for teachers include building rapport, avoiding adultification, not stereotyping, listening, and creating a welcoming environment. School psychologists should make themselves known, advocate for students, review discipline data, avoid deficit-centered language, and implement culturally responsive assessments and interventions. Culturally competent educators are needed for equitable education.
