Another Bountiful Year of Big (and Small) Donations


US higher education received $58 billion in philanthropy in fiscal 2023, second only to 2022’s record $59.5 billion, per CASE survey. Despite debates on higher education’s value, philanthropic support remains strong. Donations declined slightly due to a dip in stock market and less capital expense gifts. Survey included 757 institutions, representing 24% of US colleges but 79% of total voluntary support. Donations from organizations rose to 65%, while individual alumni and non-alumni donations slightly decreased. Mega donations ($100 million or more) doubled, accounting for 3.9% of total support.
