California ban on legacy and donor admissions at private colleges heads to governor

California legislation passed to ban private colleges from favoring applicants with alumni or donor ties. Violators must report admission rates, student diversity, and athletic status. Bill awaits Gov. Newsom’s approval, effective from Sept. 2025. Legacy ban introduced by Assemblymember Ting in response to Supreme Court ruling against race-conscious admissions. Non-compliant colleges listed on Department of Justice website. Public colleges exempt, none offer alumni/donor preference.
