Cardona pushes for more OCR funding given increased caseload

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona is advocating for increased funding for the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) due to a high caseload and a shortage of investigators. The department has over 140 open investigations related to shared ancestry discrimination, with a majority of cases launched since October 2023. Cardona stated that the agency is understaffed to handle these cases. President Biden’s budget request for fiscal year 2024 called for a 27% increase in funding for OCR, but ultimately, no increase was granted. For fiscal year 2025, Biden is seeking a $22 million increase in funding. Cardona emphasized the need for additional support to address the caseload.
