GAO: Gender Gap Persists in College Athletic Participation

A new report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) reveals that women’s participation in college athletics is still lower than men’s, despite more women enrolling in higher education. The report highlights the lack of oversight and enforcement of Title IX, which requires colleges to offer athletic opportunities proportionate to enrollment numbers. The GAO recommends improvements in enforcement efforts, including using publicly reported participation rates and opening investigations into compliance. Representative Bobby Scott emphasizes the need for equal opportunities for female athletes and closing the gender gap in college athletics.
