Diverse: Issues In Higher Education
Higher education institutions must address systemic antiblackness and take responsibility for social change, says Dr. Branden D. Elmore. He criticizes the academy’s lack of accountability in cases like Sonya Massey’s death and the exclusion of Black professor Dr. Tiffany Willoughby-Herard. Elmore calls for institutions to support diversity, equity, and inclusion, rather than relying on those directly impacted to respond. He urges public scholars to use their platforms for the oppressed and for programs to embed values of justice into their curriculum. He concludes that higher education must uphold its standards of teaching, research, and service to effect transformation and healing.
