Biden administration’s update to federal financial aid system, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), faces issues. The form, released in December 2023, a year later than promised, contains technical errors preventing some families from completing it. Education Department is behind in processing applications, delaying colleges from issuing financial aid awards. Republicans accuse the administration of prioritizing student loan cancellation over FAFSA implementation, while the administration blames lawmakers for unrealistic deadlines and insufficient resources. The FAFSA Simplification Act, passed in 2020, reduced form questions from 108 to 36 and increased income shielded from aid eligibility formula. Despite warnings, the Education Department was expected to redesign the application and update the formula by October 2022
