Kamala Harris and the Black Elite

Kamala Harris’s rise reflects America’s racial progress and the diversification of its elite. However, the growing cultural and ideological gap between the progressive Black elite and the Black majority could weaken the Democratic coalition. The Black elite, shaped by education, affluence, immigration, and intermarriage, is increasingly distinct from the Black majority. This could impact the Black elite’s ability to shape Black political behavior, particularly on issues like immigration and race-conscious policies. As Black political unity fades, Harris faces a choice: champion race-conscious policies to inspire Black solidarity, or appeal to middle- and working-class voters by downplaying race consciousness in favor of populist and patriotic themes.
