Lifetime college returns differ significantly by major, research finds

New research shows that the lifetime rate of return for a college education varies by major, gender, and race/ethnicity. A bachelor’s degree generally provides a 9-10% rate of return, with computer science and engineering majors having the best returns. Black, Hispanic, and Asian graduates had slightly higher returns than White counterparts. The study analyzed 5.8 million Americans and found that engineering had the best rate of return, while education, humanities, and arts had the lowest. Women and minority groups had higher returns, but still earned less than men overall. The study suggests that students in low-return majors should consider further education or training, and policymakers may need to increase financial aid or pay levels for certain majors….
