Diverse: Issues In Higher Education
Social media, a tool for activism and stress source for students of color, can both empower and hinder success. Black students use it for racial justice movements but face challenges due to systemic racism debates and laws restricting race discussions. Social media visibility can showcase achievements but also expose to harmful stereotypes and threats. Nearly 60% of young adults feel stressed by political content on social media, with Black users reporting higher anxiety. Misinformation and stereotypes on social media harm Black students’ mental health and sense of belonging. Universities should address these pressures with support systems combining mental health services, digital literacy, and cultural competence.
