OPINION: This is no time to ban DEI initiatives in education; we need DEI more than ever

Education faces backlash against diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) work, with bans on state funding in Alabama, Florida, Utah, Texas. DEI positions, programs restricted, challenged, canceled nationwide. Schools urged to resist, expand DEI content, protect instructors. California leads with mandatory ethnic studies in secondary education. Universities should integrate DEI content, offer professional development, update retention, tenure, promotion methods. DEI content vital for understanding white supremacy, privilege, institutional policies, stereotypes, implicit biases. Resistance to DEI often discredits educators, impacts their careers. Accommodating resistance reproduces white supremacy. DEI knowledge must be accessible, protected. Education should broaden horizons, encourage critical thinking, build informed public.
