Support for California State Senate Bill 1348: Black-Serving Institution Program, creating California’s first Minority Serving Institutional designation. Bill, authored by Senator Steven Bradford, recognizes institutions committed to serving Black students. Federal equivalent exists under Minority Serving Institution program. California’s designations include Hispanic Serving Institution and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander designations. Bill 1348 may impact Black student enrollment patterns in California. BSI designation requires Black student enrollment represent 10% of student body or at least 1,500 total Black students and institutions develop a Black and African American student success plan.
