Student loan servicer MOHELA tells advocacy group to stop ‘misleading claims’

Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MOHELA) threatens legal action against Student Borrower Protection Center (SBPC) over a report criticizing its practices. MOHELA demands the report’s removal, claiming it spreads false information about its handling of federal student loan payments and a loan forgiveness program. SBPC and the American Federation of Teachers refuse to retract the report, arguing it confirms MOHELA’s improper practices. They’ve petitioned for an audit of MOHELA. The dispute has attracted lawmakers’ attention, with Senator Elizabeth Warren inviting MOHELA’s head to a Senate banking committee meeting. The report also alleges MOHELA is responsible for an 800,000 application backlog for a loan forgiveness program, which MOHELA denies.
