Womanist Ethicist, Theologian Named MLK Professor of Religion and Black Studies

Diverse: Issues In Higher Education

Emilie Townes, former dean at Vanderbilt University’s Divinity School, is the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Professor of Religion and Black Studies at Boston University’s School of Theology. Townes, a distinguished scholar in womanist and Black theology, aims to use the role to foster unity and address social issues. She was the first Black dean at Vanderbilt Divinity School and the first Black woman president of the American Academy of Religion.
